Interesting post! I admit I don't have much patience for epic fantasy or literary fiction anymore and am an avid urban fantasy reader. But I don't think UF has changed my tastes so much as that it appeals to something I'm looking for in a read. There are LOTS of epic fantasy fans who turn their noses up at urban fantasy because it isn't "serious." Really, it's just different strokes. Is UF a chocolate chip cookie fix? I don't think so–if I find series I love, I will go back to them and re-read them….don't want a regurgitated cookie!

"Regurgitated cookie"…
I think I'm thrilled that you came up with that phrase.
So then my question would be – do you think UF just fits into today's busy/fast-paced lifestyle and epic fantasy does not? Or is it really just a matter of taste?
Also, I never understood the genre prejudices (even though I admit to having them when it comes to romance). Literary fic readers turn their nose up at genre readers; Sci-fi fans do it to fantasy fans; Fantasy readers do it to UF & paranormal readers…. I admit to wrinkling my own nose when it comes to the romance genre but I couldn't imagine thinking less of someone just because of the genre they choose to read. But I think *that* could be another post altogether!
I think it's just a matter of taste but, then again, I'm an author as well as a fan so I'm probably prejudiced. There is definitely a class system in writing (with romance filtering to the bottom, usually), but we're seeing a lot of cross-genre work now with paranormal romance and steampunk. I think people just like what they like!

I'm a fan of epic fantasy, and really don't read anything else, but maybe it's time I took a chance on a different genre. Thanks for the review of the above novels, I think I will check them out.

I'm glad I could recommend some things for you! Try looking here for more things I'd recommend: http://waitingforfairies.com/category/books/recom...
Thanks for stopping by!
Interesting points. I can't say I've read much in the way of Urban Fantasy. Maybe it's because of the "speed-dating" feel of it when I have read some? I'm not sure.
Of one thing I'm certain, I need to start committing more time to reading actual books instead of getting lost in the interwebs…
I nominated my blog for this category as well and found your blog because of BBAW. Hi!
I like the enthusiasm you have in your posts so I'll be visiting again. My favorites you linked here are the Brains: A Zombie Memoir review and the Holiday Gift Buying Guide.
Thanks for visiting! It seems like such a massive task, to read up on all these blogs for the BBAW voting, doesn't it?
I'm totally with you on this. I enjoy the same types of urban fantasy. Also epic fantasy or anything else particularly with a long, drawn-out story. I think it's all about escapism for me. Anything I can do to avoid real life, you know?
Oh, I'm with you! I love really thick fantasy novels – and series! Endless series!
Also – I got in the habit of choosing the thickest books I could find when I was younger. My mom only took us to the library every month or so, and if I didn't pick up enough really thick books, I'd be left with nothing to read for days on end. It was horrible!
I'm not sure what my books say about me. I like such a range of Fantasy and UF books. But, I do have to agree there are different reasons I like these different ranges of books.
I have been wanting to get Rob's series. It looks like fun. Enjoy your books.

It's killing me that the comprehensive schedule isn't up yet. *flails* I have, like you, cobbled together a schedule of things I want to see based on what I've been able to find from individual fan tracks, but, ugh. It's not enough.
Looking at t WoT track, I don't think I'll be down there much this year. There's a lot going on in the YA lit track that intrigues me, and I'm willing to bet that the Science and Star Trek tracks will demand my attention, too.
I think I'm too much of a geek – there are so many things and people I want to see!
I'm glad you'll be here this year.
Yes, ditto. I hate that the grids aren't up yet. I couldn't find ANYTHING on the Writer's track and I'm SURE that one could/would command most of my attention *IF* I only knew what was going on. I'm sure this schedule will change. A lot.
As for the WoT track, I basically want to go to the Winespring party, and other than that I'm "filling in" with those panels if there's nothing else to see.
I WANT THOSE SCHEDULE GRIDS!
*sigh*
But we're really glad to be going this year, too.
