Waiting for Fairies is pleased and proud to announce our very first contest! In honor of the release of White Witch, Black Curse, the newest volume in Kim Harrison’s best-selling Rachel Morgan/ The Hollows series, we’ve managed to get our tiny little fairy paws on one of the limited edition WWBC Tour T-Shirts!

These shirts were briefly available via Ms. Harrison’s website for purchase outright, but the last orders were due in by February 16th. So, if you managed to miss out – here’s your chance for a do-over!

One lucky winner of our contest will win themselves the shirt, emblazoned with the palm print of Kisten’s killer on the front and the tour cities on the reverse. Two runner’s up will get themselves a packet of T-4 Angel tomato seeds. Grow your own viral tomatoes! Kim herself will be running her own contest regarding these seeds later in the summer – if you’re brave enough to actually grow them! Keep an eye on Kim’s site for more details.

Here’s the swag:

And here are the rules for the contest:

  • The headline is a clue: To enter, post your favorite Hollows-themed swear in the comments section of this post. (An example is: ‘Tink’s Panties’ but it doesn’t have to be one of Jenks’ swear words.) Yes, this means you’ll have to have read the books – or at least be able to run a quick Google search – but why would you want to win this if you haven’t?
  • ONE comment per person only, please, or you’ll be disqualified.
  • Because I’m paying shipping out of my own light pockets, I have to limit winners to those with a mailing address in the continental US. *If you have a friend that fits the above who’s willing (and trustworthy enough) to accept it and forward the item to you, then feel free to go ahead and enter at your own risk.*
  • Contest will run through 11:59 PM ET Saturday, February 28th, 2009. The winners will be drawn at random by a web-based random number generator and announced the following week. Winners can expect to have their prizes mailed within two weeks of the announcement. I’ll provide delivery confirmation for the T-shirt for everyone’s peace of mind (specifically my own).
  • If you have questions, please use our contact form.
  • For more information on WWBC, The Hollows, or Kim Harrison, please see the links in this post.
  • Important: This site does have comment moderation turned ON. If your post does not appear right away, rest assured it has been received and will be posted shortly. DO NOT post more than once!
  • Edit: And this should go without saying but just in case – PLEASE don’t list your mailing address in your comment. Winners will be contacted via email for this information.

So it’s February again! Do you guys know what that means? It means my husband has to buy me the latest Kim Harrison novel for my birthday! White Witch, Black Curse is due to be released on February 24th, 2009, just 4 days before I turn … erm .. a number that’s just a wee bit higher than 21 years of age on the 28th. The husband, of course, is convinced that Kim and I have some sort of conspiracy that causes her books to be released just a few days before my natal day, so that he can conveniently purchase them as gifts. (Would that it were so…)

In honor of this wonderful day – not to mention the book release! – I’d like to point you toward the sneak peek released today by Harper Collins. You can read the first two chapters of White Witch, Black Curse here.

Now, I have to admit that I haven’t read them yet. Mostly because reading the first two chapters and then having to wait another week for the release date is just too much of an agony. If you’re like me, you can just go ahead and pre-order the book instead.

White Witch, Black Curse

White Witch, Black Curse

If you have no idea what I’m talking about … What are you waiting for?! Here’s the “blurb” for White Witch, Black Curse:

Some wounds take time to heal . . . and some scars never fade.

Rachel Morgan, kick-ass witch and bounty hunter, has taken her fair share of hits, and has broken lines she swore she would never cross. But when her lover was murdered, it left a deeper wound than Rachel ever imagined, and now she won’t rest until his death is solved . . . and avenged.  Whatever the cost.

Yet the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and when a new predator moves to the apex of the Inderlander food chain, Rachel’s past comes back to haunt her.

So what are you still doing here? Go read, order, or check out Kim’s site for yourself! You won’t regret it. Also stay tuned for some more Hollows-themed fun right here at WFF in the near future!

Dark Haven, Book 3 of The Chronicles of the Necromancer is a book for which I have literally been waiting for a year. When I picked up The Summoner, first book in the series, I immediately fell in love with the story of Martris Drake and his struggle against his evil brother Jared.

This review has spoilers for the first book in the series. You have been warned.

One of the things that struck me when I started reading Summoner was that Gail Martin has the rare ability to make you love her characters in a short amount of time. I was immediately drawn to Kate, Tris’ younger sister. She was a vibrant piece of reality that grabbed me right at the beginning of the story. The tragedy of her murder, along with the deaths of the remainder of the royal family, dragged me kicking and screaming into the story. From that point on, I was committed. I just had to know what would happen next.

Which is probably why I devoured Dark Haven in only a couple of days, without taking the time to go back and re-read the previous two books in the series. The problem with that is some of the details of the previous plot points were fuzzy, and that’s always frustrating. I look forward to my next re-read.

Dark Haven itself is a masterful piece of the puzzle. It has as many threads as a spider’s web, and will tangle you up in it just as quickly. My only regret is that now I have at least another year before I can discover what happens next. The majority of the focus of Haven is split between Jonmarc Vahanian in his new role as lord of Dark Haven, home of the vayash moru, and the troubles of Kiara, new Queen of Margolan, as she traverses the deadly politics of her new home at Shekerishet.

We also spend a little time with Tris as he rides to war and besieges the rebellious Lord Curane’s castle; as well as some time with King Donelon of Isenholt and the problems there. To top it all off, the Flow – source of Tris’ and his mages’ power – is starting to come apart at the seams, and a violent backlash would destroy friend and foe alike.

Sadly, Dark Haven forwards the story without resolving much of anything, A couple of pairings are made official, and the game pieces seem to be aligning for a rousing face off, but readers are left wanting more. Which isn’t a bad place at all for an author to be. I can’t wait to re-read this series so I can pick up on the subtle nuances in the text, and I’ll definitely be waiting with baited breath for the next installment. I highly recommend this series.

So there seems to be some trouble brewing for Amazon’s Kindle 2. One of the  features on the newest version of Amazon’s e-book reader is a text-to-audio function. Now, I’m assuming that the K2 uses a robot voice to read the text, but maybe someone in the know could enlighten us? In any case, the Author’s Guild claims that this function will be devastating to the audio book market, and that the authors need to be paid licensing fees.

As a writer, and as a consumer, I disagree.

I greatly enjoy audio books, it’s one of the things that keeps my brain happy when I’m working at my day job. I love to hear a good audio book reader, one who can let you know who’s speaking just by using a specific voice. I find it hard to think that any Kindle robo-reader is going to match that.

For that same reason, I don’t think I can get upset as an author that someone may be able to push a button and have my work read to them by a machine. It’s just not going to be the same as a real live person reading the story. Besides, it’s just as easy for someone to press a button and create a torrent to upload to the internet.

So no, I don’t agree that Amazon needs to pay authors to be able to have a generic machine voice read their work aloud. Just like I don’t believe consumers should have to pay authors for the privilege of reading their children bedtime stories. Neither is the same as having a true professional voice actor reading the story. People who really enjoy audio books are going to know that.

My Muse is a fickle creature. She dresses in moonlight and shadows and lives quietly in a forest glade, far from the reach of mortal thought. Most of the time I have to quietly lure her out of hiding with the promise of chocolate or a new toy to play with. There have been periods as long as months in the past when I couldn’t bribe her into showing her face at all – regardless of how I begged and pleaded. Then, on some days – like today – she hits me over the head so hard that I can’t concentrate on anything else until I finally give in and do whatever it is that she wants.

Recently, I’ve been having to work my day job quite a bit. Lots of overtime and such. So when does my shy little Muse want to dance about my mind with a tantalizing new idea? Right smack dab in the middle of my work day. There’s nothing quite like being focused on resolving your hundredth corporate problem of the day when you find yourself staring off into space and wondering what would happen to a plot line if vampires were a migratory species, racing around the world to stay ahead of the rising sun.

My Muse has done exactly this in recent days. Yet when I try to sit down and grasp her hand and make her tell me these ideas in a space where I can take advantage of them… Well, no Olympic sprinter runs as fast as a Muse who wants to avoid working.

This is probably why most of my usable ideas come to me in the middle of the night. My Muse obviously only likes working when she can be the most troublesome. So I have a multitude of strange and wonderful nighttime escapades. I call most of them my “Stephen King dreams” because my Muse is obviously a fan of horror and urban fantasy. Almost all my dream-ideas involve some sort of supernatural or frightening creature: zombies, werewolves, witches, ghosts, vampires. Or a frightening setting: an asylum, a haunted and/or mass murderer occupied house, the wind swept moors of the Scottish highlands. That sort of thing.

Sometimes when I have these sorts of dreams, the details slip away quite quickly and I’m left with nothing but the vague feeling that I would have had a great idea, if I could only remember it. Other times – like today, for instance – my Muse is like a monkey riding my back or a little cloven-hoofed voice on my shoulder whispering in my ear until I finally throw my hands up and say, “Of COURSE I had nothing better to do than to sit and write today! Long hand, you say? Sure! I LOVE aching wrists!”

What she wanted, today, was for me to sit and write nearly 2,000 words longhand about a dream she visited upon me about these hauntingly mysterious quartet of children and their curious ability to make fairy lights by playing their instruments (flute, cello, violin and piano, in case you were curious). I haven’t the faintest clue what the lights are for, why the instruments are important, or why the elder brother who is the main character is so suspicious of everyone who gets near his little sister. I also don’t know why little sister is so special. Frustratingly, I also don’t know if this story is going to develop into something more or what form it will take if it does.

Urg.

So what does your Muse do to torture you? Share in the comments. And it’s okay if it’s a drawing or painting muse, or a music muse, or even a business muse that torments you.
